CONFERENCE SERIES

The Color of Jazz

FALL 2011 CONFERENCE SERIES
The Color of Jazz: The Visual History of a Metis Music
6:00 pm at Reid Hall – Salle de conférence
PUBLIC WELCOME

This series, fruit of the collaboration between Sylvie Laurent and Robert O’Meally, focuses on the institution of Jazz, its representation and instrumentation, in a global perspective and with global repercussions. Discussions will begin with the importation and appropriation of the jazz aesthetic from America to Europe with echoes from Africa through iconic figures like Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Discussions will then open up to the world and to different realms of social life, from the Harlem Renaissance to la Négritude to pan-African emancipation to social outcry in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Jazz will be approached as a means of representation (Is jazz “black music”? Is it “primitive”?), an artifact of both local color and foreignness, and a mode of communication transcending “music” to inspire and encompass visual expression and political action. This series is an ongoing dialogue between international scholars and artists of jazz, with numerous guest speakers and honored attendees.
